Strengths and weaknesses
A quick honest read on what this shape gives you and what it asks you to accept.
Strengths
- The CDM at the base and the CAM at the tip give a diamond that controls the center
- Two strikers and a CAM put three players close to goal for quick combinations
- LM and RM give more width and flank cover than the narrow (2) version
Weaknesses
- No wingers in the front line, so final-third width relies on overlapping full-backs
- The lone CDM covers both half-spaces when LM and RM push forward
- Strikers and the CAM stay central, leaving few players to press a switch of play
Wide diamond or the narrow 4-1-2-1-2 (2)?
This page covers the wide diamond, with LM and RM either side of the CDM and CAM. EA FC also lists a narrow 4-1-2-1-2 (2), which swaps LM and RM for two central midfielders. Pick the wide version when you need help defending the flanks, and the narrow (2) when you want to win the middle and can trust your full-backs to supply the width.
