Create and deliver a cross from a wide 2v1. Fix the defender with the ball, release the overlap to the byline, and deliver a quality cross for a runner to finish.
A winger and an overlapping full-back attack one defender in the wide channel, with a striker in the box and a keeper. Fix the defender with the ball, then release the overlap to the byline for the cross. Deliver near post, far post, or cut-back for the striker to finish. Rotate the roles and add a second striker for near and far runs.
Two against one is only an overload if the defender is forced to choose. Standing a winger and a full-back side by side twenty yards from a defender who can comfortably see both gives you a one against one and a spectator, and that is what most wide 2v1s actually look like in youth football.
Forcing the choice means getting close enough that he cannot cover both, and the ball carrier is the one who does it. Driving directly at the defender until he has to address the ball is what creates the moment where committing to the carrier abandons the runner, and staying with the runner abandons the ball. Everything the pair does afterwards is decided by which he picks, which is why the carrier should be looking at the defender rather than at his teammate.
That produces two solutions and the players need both. If the defender comes to the ball, release the overlap and the outside is free. If he sits and covers the run, the carrier now has space to attack himself and should take it rather than passing out of politeness. Teams that always release the overlap regardless are running a pattern, not solving a problem.
The delivery depends on which solution was taken. A released overlap arrives at the byline and should cut it back. A carrier who kept it is usually deeper and should whip it early, before the defence recovers.
Speed matters because the overload is temporary. A covering midfielder arrives within two or three seconds and turns 2v1 into 2v2.
