Setup & instructions

Set two wall players to the sides and two mannequins as the defensive lines up a channel. The player drives at the first line, plays a wall pass and bursts past to collect the return, then repeats to beat the second line, before driving on. Firm passes, committed runs, and quick returns into the runner's path. Rotate the roles up the channel.

Setup time: 2 min

Tactical breakdown

The second one-two is considerably harder than the first, and the reason is not fitness. Arriving at the first defender, a player is balanced, in control of his speed, and can choose the moment to commit him. Arriving at the second, he is already travelling at pace, the ball is coming to him rather than being carried, and the moment to play arrives whether he is ready or not.

That is the actual content of this exercise. Chaining two combinations trains the recovery between them: taking the return in stride, getting the head up while moving quickly, and engaging a second defender without slowing down enough to let the first one back into the game.

The common failure is a heavy first touch off the first return. A player who has just sprinted takes a touch too far in front, has to chase it, and by the time he reaches the second defender that defender is set and the momentum is gone. The touch off the return should be shorter than feels natural at that speed.

The two wall players should stand at different distances from the line of travel, because in a match the support is never symmetrical. Identical spacing lets a player groove one weight of pass and one angle, which is precisely what will not be available when it matters.

Worth adding once the pattern holds: let the second wall player decide whether to return it or keep it. That single variation stops the sequence being a memorised script.

How to run this drill

  1. Set two defenders in a line with two wall players. The walls stand at different distances from the line of travel. Symmetrical spacing grooves one angle and one weight, which is never what a match offers.
  2. Commit the first defender and go. Drive at his front foot, play the wall pass firm to the back foot, and sprint before it arrives. The standard one-two, executed from a balanced start.
  3. Take the return with a short touch. Shorter than feels natural at that speed. A heavy touch off the first return means chasing it, and the second defender is set by the time you arrive.
  4. Get the head up while still moving. The second combination has to be read at pace. This is the specific skill the chain trains and the reason it is worth more than two separate one-twos.
  5. Engage the second defender without slowing. Dropping speed to set up the second one-two lets the first defender recover and turns a broken line into a crowded one.
  6. Let the second wall choose. Once the pattern holds, allow the wall player to keep the ball instead of returning it. That one variation stops the sequence being a memorised script.

Coaching focus

FROM SESSION PLAN

Coaching points

  • Commit each defender with the ball before you pass
  • Wall pass firm and to the supporting player's back foot
  • Burst past the instant you release each pass
  • Wall players return it first time into the runner's path
  • Collect the return in stride and attack the next line

Common mistakes

  • Passing before committing the defender
  • A slow pass that lets the line recover
  • Not bursting past, so the return has no target
  • Returns to feet instead of into the path

Progressions & regressions

VARIATIONS

Progressions

  • Live defenders instead of mannequins
  • Finish with a shot after the second combination
  • Add a third line for a longer combination chain

Regressions

  • One wall pass and one line to start
  • Walk the pattern to learn the sequence and timing
  • Wall players serve the return by hand at first
