Strikers: run onto the ball in stride, stay composed, and pick a corner early before the keeper sets. Keepers: get into the line of the ball, time the advance, then decide, block, spread, or dive at the right moment.
A feeder plays a through ball in behind for a striker starting wide of the goal; the striker runs on and goes 1v1 with the keeper. Alternate the outcome the coach calls for: a first-time or early finish to a corner, or make the keeper win it by advancing and spreading. Keeper distributes to restart. Rotate strikers through and keep the service varied.
Nothing in football is squandered as often as a one against one with the goalkeeper, and the reason is almost never technique. It is timing of the decision. A striker who decides where the ball is going while it is still travelling to him will beat a keeper. A striker who arrives, looks up, and then chooses has already given the keeper the half second he needs to set and make himself big.
That is why this is drilled from both sides at once. The two roles are the same problem viewed from opposite ends: whoever commits second wins. If the keeper goes to ground early, the striker lifts it or rolls it round him. If the striker shows his hand early, the keeper sets his feet and closes the angle.
For the striker, side-foot placement beats power almost every time. A clean pass into the far corner from twelve yards is unsaveable if the keeper has committed, and the attempt to blast it is what produces the shot straight at a spreading body. Open the hips and place it.
For the keeper, the sequence is set, advance, then decide. Getting into the line of the ball first is what makes everything after it possible. Spreading late, big and low, takes away both the low shot and the lift, and diving early takes away neither. The keeper who stays on his feet longest usually wins.
Neither side should stop at the first contact. Rebounds are part of the chance and the repetition is not over until the ball is dead.
Save it to your private drills, then change the animation, adjust positions, swap equipment, or drop it into a session block. Or start from a blank pitch and build your own.
