Beat a defensive pair with a combination and finish. Draw a defender with the ball, combine to break the line with a one-two or overlap, and finish first time before the cover recovers.
2v2 attacking a full goal with a keeper, defenders start goal-side. Attackers combine, a one-two, overlap, or third-man, to break the pair and finish. On losing it the attackers press to win it back. Keep it sharp with quick reps and a queue. Reward goals from a combination over an individual effort.
Beating a pair is a different problem from beating a man, and attackers who are good at 1v1 often struggle here for a specific reason: whatever gets past the first defender runs straight into the second, who has been watching the whole thing develop and is already positioned for it.
So the combination has to account for both. Drawing the first defender with the ball is the same as any overload, but the move that follows has to go somewhere the covering defender is not, which usually means playing through the space beside him rather than through the gap between the two. A one-two that beats the presser and delivers the ball into the cover has beaten nobody.
The timing detail is that the second attacker's run has to threaten the cover rather than simply support the ball. A supporting player standing level and available lets the cover hold his position comfortably. One running beyond, into the space behind the pair, forces him to drop and creates the room the combination actually uses.
Speed matters more than in a 2v1, because two defenders can recover for each other. A one-two executed at walking pace lets the beaten defender rejoin, and the pair is intact again. Bursting past on the return is what makes the break stick.
Finishing first time is the standard here for the same reason as every overload drill: the cover is arriving, and a settling touch is the difference between a shot and a block. Expect a lower conversion rate than a 2v1, because it should be lower.
Save it to your private drills, then change the animation, adjust positions, swap equipment, or drop it into a session block. Or start from a blank pitch and build your own.
