Setup & instructions

Six players around a box keep the ball against three defenders. Support at angles and move the ball to shift the three, then split them with a firm pass across the box when the gap appears. Two touch on the outside, one touch when you can. Rotate the three defenders after a set time or number of splits.

Setup time: 1 min

Tactical breakdown

Six against three is a comfortable overload, and that comfort is the problem the coach has to solve. Left alone, a group this size will pass the ball around the outside for ten minutes, complete forty passes, feel successful, and practise nothing they could not already do. The numbers make retention easy, so retention cannot be the objective.

The fix is a condition that makes progress the point: a pass that splits the three defenders scores, and simply keeping it does not. Once that is in place the exercise changes character immediately, because players start looking through the middle rather than around the outside, and the defenders start defending the lane rather than chasing the ball.

Supporting at angles matters more with six than with four, oddly, because there is room for players to become lazy. Two teammates standing on the same line either side of the ball look like support and offer one angle between them. A yard of adjustment turns one option into two, and with six players the coach has to insist on it rather than rely on necessity.

The defenders need a genuine incentive too. Three chasing a ball they cannot win will switch off within a minute, which makes the exercise easier still. Giving them something to win, a point for a turnover or a set number of touches to force, keeps the pressure real.

Moving the ball to shift the defenders, rather than moving it for its own sake, is the habit worth naming repeatedly.

How to run this drill

  1. Set six around a box with three inside. A generous area, since nine players need room. Six on the outside, three defending in the middle, one ball.
  2. Score for splitting, not for keeping. A pass through the three scores. Without this condition the group circulates comfortably for ten minutes and practises nothing it could not already do.
  3. Insist on staggered support. Two players on the same line offer one angle between them. A yard of adjustment makes it two, and with six players nobody is forced into it by necessity.
  4. Move the ball to shift the defenders. Circulation is a tool for creating the gap, not an end in itself. Two quick passes one way is what opens the lane on the other.
  5. Give the defenders something to win. A point for a turnover, or a target number of forced touches. Three players chasing a ball they cannot win switch off inside a minute.
  6. Rotate on every turnover. Whoever loses it goes in. Keeping the same three in the middle for long stretches lets the intensity fall away and the overload becomes meaningless.

Coaching focus

FROM SESSION PLAN

Coaching points

  • Support at angles, give the ball two options
  • Move the ball to shift the three defenders
  • Scan for the split before you receive
  • Break the line with a firm pass across the box
  • One and two touch to keep the tempo up

Common mistakes

  • Passing round the outside without ever splitting
  • Flat support, no angle to receive
  • Forcing the split when the gap is not there
  • Slow ball movement, letting the three set

Progressions & regressions

VARIATIONS

Progressions

  • One touch only on the outside
  • Two points for a pass that splits two defenders
  • Add a fourth defender for a 6v4

Regressions

  • Bigger box and three touch to start
  • Add a seventh outside player for more support
  • Two defenders to make it easier
