Setup & instructions

Ball on the touchline in the attacking half. The taker calls the routine; a teammate sets a legal block on the marker (body in the path, no arms), the runner peels off it into space, and the taker drives a low kick-in to his stronger foot to finish first time. It must be taken within four seconds. Rehearse both sides and vary the block and the runner.

Setup time: 2 min

Tactical breakdown

Four seconds. That is the rule which makes a futsal kick-in a different thing from a throw-in, and everything about how you coach it follows from the count. The referee starts as soon as the ball is stationary on the line, and losing possession to the clock is a turnover you handed over for nothing.

The consequence is that the routine has to be decided before the ball goes out, never negotiated afterwards. That is why a code word matters more here than at any restart in the outdoor game. Somebody shouts a name, everybody already knows which block and which run, and the kicker is delivering rather than looking.

The second rule that shapes it is that a kick-in is delivered with the foot, so it can be driven hard and flat in a way a throw never can. A futsal kick-in is closer to a corner than to a throw-in and should be treated as a shooting opportunity rather than a way of restarting possession.

The block is the mechanism. One player puts his body in the runner's path, the runner delays and then peels sharply off him, and for one second the defender is a body-width behind. Body in the path, balanced, arms in. Arms out is a foul, and in futsal fouls accumulate until they become a ten-metre free kick against you, which is a far more expensive mistake than its outdoor equivalent.

Expect a low conversion rate and coach it anyway. A routine that scores once in eight is still the most valuable four seconds a futsal team gets.

How to run this drill

  1. Call the code word before the ball is dead. Deciding the routine after the count has started is how teams lose the ball to the referee rather than to the opposition.
  2. Get the ball still and on the line fast. The four seconds begin when it is stationary, so fussing over placement burns the window the routine needs to run inside.
  3. Set the block with the body, arms in. A stationary body in the path is legal. Arms out or moving into the defender is a foul, and futsal fouls accumulate against you.
  4. Delay, then peel off the block. Leaving early means arriving before the block is set, and the routine turns into two teammates running into each other.
  5. Drive the kick-in to the stronger foot. It is delivered with the foot, so it can be flat and hard. Put it where the runner can hit it without adjusting his body.
  6. Finish first time inside the count. Controlling first gives the defence the recovery second the block just bought. Treat it as a shooting chance, not a possession restart.

Coaching focus

FROM SESSION PLAN

Coaching points

  • Call a code word so everyone knows the routine
  • Legal block: body in the path, balanced, no push or arms
  • Runner delays, then peels sharply off the block into space
  • Driven, low kick-in to the runner's stronger foot
  • Finish first time, taken inside the four seconds

Common mistakes

  • Blocking with the arms or pushing, giving away a foul
  • The runner going too early, before the block is set
  • A slow, lofted kick-in the defender can recover on
  • Taking too long and losing it to the four-second rule

Progressions & regressions

VARIATIONS

Progressions

  • Add a feint: taker steps to the back post, a second taker delivers
  • Second defender, so the block has to be timed perfectly
  • Aim the kick-in for the pivot to lay off and finish

Regressions

  • No defender first, to groove the block, run and finish
  • Remove the four-second limit while learning the pattern
  • Two touches for the finisher: control, then shoot
