Futsal: The Train and Blocker Corner

Setup & instructions

Line the attackers up in a train in front of goal. On the call, the front man blocks the markers' path (body in the way, no arms) while the player behind peels off him into the space. The taker drives the corner low and flat for a first-time finish. Have two or three options off the same shape depending on how the defence sets up, and take it inside four seconds.

Setup time: 2 min

Tactical breakdown

Defenders cannot mark a run they have not seen developing, and the train exists to delay the moment they see it. Four players standing in single file on the edge of the area present a defence with one problem instead of four, because until they break off in different directions there is nothing to pick up. In a court-sized space where defenders have almost no recovery distance, half a second of confusion is the entire margin.

That is a basketball idea and futsal borrows it openly. The front man of the train is not attacking the ball at all. His job is to stand still in the path of the defender who would otherwise track the runner behind him. The runner's timing is what makes it work: leaving too early means arriving before the block is set, and the routine collapses into two teammates colliding.

The delivery has to be low and driven. Futsal ceilings and futsal goals both punish a floated ball, and a low delivery across the face gives a runner arriving off a block something he can redirect with one touch rather than something he has to control.

Two honest warnings. The block must be a stationary body with the arms in, since moving into a defender or using the hands is a foul, and fouls accumulate in futsal until they eventually gift the opposition a ten-metre free kick. And a rehearsed corner works until the opposition has seen it twice, so carry a second option off the same shape and use it early rather than saving it.

How to run this drill

  1. Line up in single file on the edge. Four players in a train look like one problem. The defence cannot assign markers to runs that have not separated yet.
  2. Front man sets a stationary block. He is not attacking the ball. He stands in the path of the defender who would otherwise track the runner behind him.
  3. Keep the arms in and the feet still. Moving into a defender or using the hands is a foul, and futsal fouls accumulate into a ten-metre free kick against you.
  4. Runner delays until the block is set. Going early means arriving before the screen exists, which turns a rehearsed routine into two teammates running into each other.
  5. Peel off sharply into the space. A rounded run gives the defender the angle back. The change of direction has to be sudden enough that he cannot cut the corner.
  6. Deliver low and driven across the face. A floated ball is wrong for the ceiling and the goal size. Low across the face can be redirected with one touch.
  7. Carry a second option off the same shape. The routine works until they have seen it twice. Show the same train and do something else with it before they adjust.

Coaching focus

FROM SESSION PLAN

Coaching points

  • Line up as a train so the defenders cannot see the runs coming
  • Front man blocks legally: body in the path, balanced, no arms
  • Runner delays, then peels sharply off the block
  • Drive the corner low and flat, not floated, it is a shooting ball
  • Have two or three options off the same shape, and take it in four seconds

Common mistakes

  • Blocking with the arms or pushing, giving away the free kick
  • The runner going before the block is set
  • A floated corner the keeper or a defender can attack
  • Everyone running to the same spot, so the defence just covers it

Progressions & regressions

VARIATIONS

Progressions

  • Second runner attacks the far post as an alternative option
  • Call a different option each time off the same train shape
  • Defenders live, so the block and timing must be exact

Regressions

  • Walk the block and the peel before adding the delivery
  • No markers first so the runner and the delivery can be grooved
  • Two touches for the finisher while learning it
