Three Stations, Four Players

Train the third man combination using the simplest possible setup. One spare player forces continuous movement, and the fixed short-long alternation means every player passes both lengths in turn.

Setup & instructions

Lay three markers in a triangle about eleven metres a side. Four players. The rhythm is a short set of four or five metres followed by a long pass of around ten to the next station. Because there are four players and three markers, one is always travelling to the station he is about to receive at. Nobody plays two long passes in a row. Two touch, then one touch on the sets, and reverse direction after a few minutes.

Setup time: 1 min

Tactical breakdown

A passing triangle with three players and three markers is the most common shape in football coaching and one of the least demanding. Everybody has a home, everybody stays on it, and the ball goes round. It warms players up and teaches almost nothing.

Adding a fourth player to the same three markers changes it completely at no setup cost. Now somebody is always without a station, which means somebody is always travelling, and the pattern only continues if that player arrives at the right place at the right time. Nobody can stand still, because standing still leaves a station empty and the sequence dies.

The short-long alternation on top of that is what makes it a third man exercise rather than just a rotation. The four metre set is a preparation pass, and the ten metre ball that follows it goes to the player who has been arriving. He was not involved in the set at all, which is exactly the position a third man occupies in a real attacking move.

The simplicity is a genuine virtue. Three markers, four players, no mannequins or poles, in an area eleven metres a side. It fits into any corner of a pitch, it works with the numbers a coach is often left with, and the difficulty comes from the structure rather than from equipment, which means it does not degrade when the cones run out.

How to run this drill

  1. The spare player never waits. With four players and three stations somebody is always travelling. If he stands still, a marker is unoccupied and the pattern stops.
  2. Short set, then long pass. The alternation is the structure. Two long passes together and the third man has disappeared from the sequence entirely.
  3. Set into the forward foot. The four metre pass exists so the next player can hit the long ball immediately. Delivered behind him it costs a touch and the timing goes.
  4. Arrive already turned. Reaching a station facing back the way you came means a touch to turn before you can do anything. Open up as you travel.
  5. Two weights, deliberately. Four metres is cushioned and ten metres is struck. Playing both at one pace is the habit this shape exists to break.
  6. Follow the ball, not your memory. Move to the station you just passed to. Drifting back to where you started leaves two players in one place and a marker empty.

Coaching focus

FROM SESSION PLAN

Coaching points

  • The spare player is always moving to the next station, never waiting
  • Short set then long pass, alternating without exception
  • Set the ball first time into the passer's forward foot
  • Arrive at the station already turned, not on the marker facing back
  • Cushion the four metre pass, strike the ten metre one
  • Move to the station you passed to, not the one you came from

Common mistakes

  • The spare player standing and waiting for the ball to reach him
  • Two long passes in a row, which breaks the third man structure
  • Arriving at a marker facing the wrong way
  • Setting the ball behind the receiver so he cannot play long

Progressions & regressions

VARIATIONS

Progressions

  • One touch on both the set and the long pass
  • Reverse the direction on a call
  • Add a fifth player, which changes the rotation entirely

Regressions

  • Three players and three stations, removing the rotation
  • Two touches throughout
  • Shrink the triangle so the long pass is six metres
