Scoring Goals: U6-U8 Finishing (45 Min)

A forty-five minute session for the youngest players, roughly under-6 to under-8, on the best part of football: scoring goals. Everything is built around having a go and putting the ball in the net, with no goalkeepers so the goals actually go in. Each child gets a huge number of shots, dribbles in and strikes, and finishes in a four against four. It is about the joy of scoring far more than any shooting technique.

Objective: Start instantly, every child touching a ball

Coach note: Get them moving before you explain anything. A ball each is the most valuable thing at this age, so keep it flowing and do not stop the group to correct one child. This also gets the head coming up, which they will need to aim a shot in a moment.

Dribble Gates10'

dribbling · 1 players

Every child on a ball, moving from the first second. Coach on the move.

2 · technicalDribble in and shoot14 min · medium

Objective: Take as many shots as possible

Coach note: The number of shots each child takes is the only thing that matters here, so run several goals at once and keep it continuous, score and go again. Coach lightly: look up before you shoot, and try both feet, no more than that. If shots are falling short the run is too long, so move the start cone closer until every child is scoring, because a goal makes them want to do it again and a short shot teaches nothing. Celebrate every goal loudly.

Dribble In and Shoot14'

finishing · 1 players

Volume is everything. Several goals at once, score and go again, celebrate every goal.

3 · tacticalDribble past and finish8 min · medium

Objective: Beat something, then score

Coach note: This links dribbling and shooting, which is what a real goal usually is. Keep the slalom short and easy so the ball stays close and the child still gets to shoot quickly, since the finish is still the reward. Head up the moment they are through the last cone. Keep several lanes running so nobody queues.

Slalom Dribble and Finish8'

dribbling · 2 players

Short and easy so the ball stays close. Head up the moment they are through, then finish.

4 · gamePlay and score10 min · high

Objective: Score in a real game, everyone involved

Coach note: The game is the best teacher at this age, so let them play with no keeper and no positions, everyone in it the whole time. The swarm around the ball is fine and sorts itself out with time. Keep the games short and rotate the teams, never knock anyone out, and run two games side by side if you have more than eight children.

4v4 to Goals, No Keepers10'

possession · 8 players

Short games, rotate teams, no keepers, no eliminations. Let them score and enjoy it.

5 · recoveryFinish and smile3 min · low

Objective: End happy

Coach note: Keep this very short and happy. Ask who scored a goal today and let a few shout out, because the memory of scoring is what makes them want to come back, which is the whole point at this age. Cool-down has no physical benefit here, so this exists purely for the smile and the goodbye.

Cool-Down Jog and Stretch3'

conditioning · 4 players

Very short and happy. Ask who scored. The smile is the whole point.
