Defensive football drills

Screen the pocket to deny the 10. Position in the passing lane in the cover shadow, force play backward, and step in to intercept the forced pass between the lines.

Win the ball with a firm block tackle. Jockey to stay in front, be patient, and step in on the front foot to block it the moment the attacker knocks it past, staying on your feet.

Spring the offside trap as a unit. Hold a flat line, read the striker's run, and step up together on the trigger so the pass finds him offside. One caller, one movement, everyone level.

Win the ball with a clean slide tackle. Recover to get level, time the slide as the attacker exposes the ball, win it with the leading foot, and get up quickly to clear or play.

Defend a long throw into the box. Attack the ball, be first to the contact, and head it clear high and wide before the attackers can flick it on.

Track an off-ball runner to deny the finish. Check the shoulder, pick up the blindside run early, stay goalside and touch-tight, and be first to the low cross to cut it out.

Defend a 2v2 as a partnership. Press the ball and show it one way, cover behind at the right angle and distance, rotate the roles on the switch, and step in to win the forced pass.

Defend the cutback. Recover to the danger zone as the ball reaches the byline, read the pull-back, and get across the line of the cutback in front of the striker to intercept, block, or clear.

Delay and contain a 2v1. Slow the carrier without committing, protect the most dangerous space, and jockey across to force the attack backward or wide rather than through.

Clear the corner decisively and counter. Attack the ball rather than waiting for it, clear it high and away from goal, win the second ball, and exploit the space behind the committed attackers with a fast break.

Contain and beat a winger in a wide 1v1. Approach at an angle with your back foot in line to force the play down the line, stay side-on and patient, and time the tackle rather than overcommitting.

Defend as a connected unit. Slide across together with the ball, keep 6 to 8 metres between each defender, press with the nearest player while the rest cover and balance, and stay compact to force the play wide.

Defenders: run the recovery line, into the space the attacker is heading, not at their heels. Get goal-side, jockey side-on to delay, then close the distance and block the shot with a committed body.

Attackers: commit the defender at pace and beat them with a change of direction and acceleration. Defenders: close down quickly, stay low and patient, and show the attacker away from goal.
