Possession drills for U11-U12

A pass count forces patience and manufactures pointless sideways passes to reach the number. Use it to fix one problem, then take it off.

Width is made by players, not cones. The hardest job here belongs to the winger who must stay wide and uninvolved for twenty seconds.

A perfect switch controlled facing your own goal has achieved nothing. The pass is only half of it, and it is the half coaches watch.

One condition removes the long ball: the pass has to go through the middle third. A 5v5 game that forces young teams to actually build an attack.

Four gates mean the target keeps changing. Players cannot rehearse a route, they have to look up and take whichever one is unguarded.

Neutrals guarantee a permanent overload, and teams still lose the ball. Finding the free man is a habit, not an arithmetic result.

Adding a direction changes everything. Suddenly there is a wrong way to pass, and half the safe options in a rondo stop being safe.

Possession dies in the middle third. Teams build out well, arrive in the final third badly, and the loss almost always happens in between.

Playing out will cost you goals while a team learns it. A coach who has not decided to accept that in advance will abandon it by October.
