The High Press as a System: U16-U19 (90 Min)

A ninety minute session for under-16s to under-19s on pressing as an organised system rather than as effort. It is built on the five principles a senior press runs on: the mentality that pressing is an opportunity, the ability to press and hold shape at once, locking play to one side, reading the triggers that start it together, and recovering fast when a line is broken. The cover shadow, the trap and the coordinated back-pass press are all taught properly.

Objective: Warm up on the collective trigger

Coach note: Get them pressing together off the call before any of the detail, because the collective habit is the foundation and the individual technique refines it later. Insist the call is loud and the whole unit reacts, even when it feels artificial. Praise coordinated pressing, not the fastest single player.

Communication: Press on the Call10'

pressing · 7 players

Loud call, whole unit reacts. Coordinated pressing over the fastest individual.

2 · technicalThe cover shadow, and the trigger18 min · high

Objective: Deny two options with one run, and spring off the cue

Coach note: The cover shadow is the single most valuable individual pressing skill and the one that separates a system from a chase: by curving the approach to sit on the line into the pivot, one player denies the forward pass and shepherds the carrier square, doing two jobs at once. On the trigger, the discipline is holding the mid-block until the cue and then pressing as a unit, because a press sprung early or by one player is beaten. Coach the stutter step on arrival here too, since arriving out of control is the most common way a presser gets beaten. Water break between the two activities.

Hold until the trigger, then spring as a unit. Early or solo presses get beaten.

3 · tacticalLock the side, spring the trap24 min · high

Objective: Force play one way, and win it there

Coach note: This is where individual pressing becomes a system. Locking play to one side makes the opponent predictable, so the interception can be planned rather than hoped for, and the touchline does half the work as an extra defender. The trap is the senior expression of it: the first defender's angle deliberately leaves the wide pass on, and the unit springs the moment it is played, which is pressing as a plan rather than a reaction. The fault to watch is the switch, so coach the midfield body shape that stops the ball reaching the free weak side, because a press that gets switched is an overload handed to the opponent. Water break between the two activities.

Ball-Side Overload Press12'

pressing · 5 players

Lock one side, stop the switch. Midfield body shape denies the weak side.

Leave the wide pass on, spring on it together. Pressing as a plan, not a reaction.

Objective: Run the whole system, and drop in order when it breaks

Coach note: This block is the system under real conditions, and the part most sessions skip is the fifth principle, recovery. When the press is beaten, and it will be, the answer is a fast, ordered drop that buys time to press again, not an either-or panic that either lunges or abandons the goal. Coach the controlled line drop, since a team that only knows win-it-high is a team that gets countered. Count balls won in the attacking third against times the press was played through, and read both out, because the second number is where the learning is. Coach with questions between goals. This is the block that needs a season of repetition, so treat one go as a start.

Coach the recovery when the press is beaten, the ordered drop. Count balls won high against times played through.

Objective: End calmly and fix the five principles

Coach note: Keep this short and be honest about why it exists. Cool-down research in adults shows no effect on soreness or next-day performance and there is no children's evidence at all, so this block is here for ritual and reflection. Ask what starts the press and what we do when it is beaten. If they can give you the triggers and the ordered recovery, they understand pressing as a system rather than as running around.

Pressing as an organised system

Session philosophy

The theme, the principles, and the outcomes you should see in players by the final whistle.

Session theme

Pressing as an organised system

Session day type: training

Key principles

  • Pressing is an opportunity to win it high, not a chore
  • Two jobs at once: press the ball and hold the shape
  • Lock play to one side and make them predictable
  • Press together on the trigger, recover together when it breaks

Learning outcomes

  • Players press with the correct angle and cover shadow to deny the forward pass
  • Players lock play to one side and prevent the switch to the weak side
  • The unit springs the press together off a shared trigger
  • Players recover quickly and in order when the first line is broken
