Shooting football drills

From twenty-five yards the target changes. On target and low forces a save and a rebound; chasing corners from there mostly finds the stand.

Geometry says the far corner is bigger, but the near post is the one keepers leave. From a tight angle, both are live if you pick early.

The first shooting drill a young player should do. Ball still, short angled approach, plant foot beside it, ankle locked, laces through the middle.

Bending a ball the wrong way is the only reason to use the outside of the foot. It curls away from where the inside foot would send it.

Most chances are missed by hitting them too hard. Set the ball, pick the corner, and pass it into the net with the inside of the foot.

Repetition is the point and also what breaks the technique. The skill being trained is resetting between shots, not the shots themselves.

Shooting under pressure is a race, and most players lose it by trying to win it properly. Early and on target beats late and perfect.

A ball moving across you is struck differently from one arriving at you. The plant foot has to travel with it or the shot drags wide.

The bounce is the whole problem. Meet it a fraction after it lands and the ground does half the work of keeping the shot down.

Curl beats power because the ball keeps moving after the keeper has committed. He dives where it was, not where it ends up.

Keep it low is the most given and least useful shooting instruction. Where the plant foot lands is what actually decides height.
