Transitions football drills

React quickest to the second ball. Read the aerial duel, anticipate where the knockdown drops, win the loose ball before the opponent, and break forward off it.

Defend a 3v2 counter. Retreat and delay rather than dive in, jockey the carrier, protect the killer pass with the second defender, and step in to intercept the forced ball.

Turn defending a corner into a goal. Head it clear, break at speed with the first thought forward, and finish the counter before the opponents recover.

Launch a fast counter from a goalkeeper save. Claim the shot, distribute wide at once to a breaking player, drive into the space, and release the runner ahead before the opponents recover.

Prevent the counter-attack with rest defence. Hold a staggered shape behind the ball during the attack, then on the turnover delay the ball, cover the runner, and force the counter backward to buy recovery time.

Attack a 4v2 counter and finish. Carry to commit the defenders, use the decoy and the width to stretch them, and release the runner in behind with a well-timed through ball to finish.

Compete in a 3v3 with fast transitions. Keep the ball with support and depth, react the instant it is lost, and break at once into the space the opponent has vacated to attack the zone.

Win and use the transition in a 2v2. On losing it, react immediately to defend or counter-press; on winning it, break forward at once into the space the opponent has left and attack the end zone.

Compete in a realistic small-sided game: keep the ball to progress, win it back quickly when you lose it, and punish the transition by attacking the end zone the opponent has just left open.

Turn the moment you lose the ball into your best chance to score. React instantly, one player presses the ball while the other cuts the escape, win it back high, and finish before the defence is set.

Attackers: exploit the overload before the defence recovers its shape. Carry to commit a defender, then release the free player with the right pass at the right moment. Defenders: delay, stay compact between the ball and goal, and force the play to a decision.
