Transitions football drills

Long balls are decided twice. The first contest is in the air and the second, on the floor, is the one that decides possession.

Two defenders against three are not trying to win the ball at all. They are buying seconds until a third defender gets back to help.

Isolate the first action of a counter-attack. Receive under pressure, take one positive touch away from the defender, drive forward and release the runner.

Transition at U9 is not a counter-attacking system. It is one simple rule on the turnover: win it, and go at the other goal now. A 4v4 game built on that.

A team defending a corner faces the most exposed shape its opponent will show all match. Six or seven of them are in your box.

Young players think being an attacker or a defender is who they are. Transition training is where they learn it changes twice a minute.

Twelve players and one ball is a queueing problem before it is a coaching one. Waves solve it, and the trade-off is shallow coaching.

Counter-attacks have a window of roughly eight seconds. The skill nobody coaches is recognising the moment it has closed and stopping.

A 3v2 in futsal expires in about three seconds. Recovery distances are tiny, so hesitation does not cost a yard, it costs the advantage.

The counter starts in the keeper's hands. A team that has just shot at goal is committed forward and has nobody watching the outlet.

Rest defence is the work done while you are still attacking. Get it wrong and the counter is already unstoppable when it begins.

Adding a fourth attacker makes a counter slower, not more dangerous. The extra option invites a pass where a run was needed.

Even numbers change what a transition drill teaches. There is no spare man, so the advantage has to come from reacting first.

Two against two removes every excuse. Each player attacks, defends, presses and recovers, and the turnover is always their problem.

The game scaled down. 4v4 in a 25x18 box scoring in end zones, where the five seconds after losing the ball decide almost everything.

Losing the ball produces an emotional reaction, and the emotion is the enemy. The players who react first are the ones not complaining.

Three against two gives you a spare man, and the commonest way to waste him is to find him before the defender has committed.
